Apply for the Summer Artist 2026 position
Are you Seinäjoki’s tenth Summer Artist?
The Cultural Services of the City of Seinäjoki is looking for a Summer Artist for the tenth time. The idea behind the two-month summer job (June 8–August 9, 2026) is to hire a visual artist or an art student at the beginning of their career to create an art project related to their own artistic work. The Summer Artist’s project must be visible in some way to visitors of the Art and Culture Center Kalevan Navetta and to the citizens of Seinäjoki during the summer. The application must include a preliminary project proposal. We are looking for project ideas in which artistic work is thematically and conceptually related to celebration or festivities in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Summer Artists. You are free to interpret what celebration means to you at this time. What makes a celebration, and who or what deserves to be celebrated? Celebrations consist of various traditions and customs, and they bring people together. The city of numerous festivals invites people to celebrate. The city of numerous festivals invites people to celebrate. Kunsthalle Seinäjoki has an anniversary exhibition featuring new works by previous Summer Artists from 2018 to 2023. The Flashback exhibition is open from March 7th to August 8th, 2026.
For example, process-oriented, site-specific, performative, and event-based art projects are possible ways of making art during the Summer Artist work period. The project can be completed, for example, in an urban space, at Kalevan Navetta or as a part of various pre-agreed events during the summer. The specific tasks for the work period will be determined based on the artist’s ideas, interests, and methods in consultation with Kunsthalle Seinäjoki.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for strong artistic vision and inspiring, original project ideas. It is important that the artistic project can be completed within the duration of the work period (two months) and that the work is suitable for presentation to all ages in a public space, considering general safety requirements and licensing issues.
We expect independent and audience-friendly approach to work, good teamwork and communication skills.
Applicants must submit a preliminary project idea or a work plan with their application, describing what they would like to do as a Summer Artist. The project plan must include: a project description related to the theme of celebration, a preliminary schedule and budget, partners, and a list of possible locations. The project idea should be no longer than one A4 page. Write your project application in the application field and attach your website or samples of your previous work to the application.
We encourage applicants of all genders and from all minorities to apply, regardless of their ethnic origin, possible disabilities, religion, or age.
