Kunsthalle Seinäjoki presents new video work from Jessica Segall!

A screening of Jessica Segall’s new video work and a queer-themed guided tour

On Friday, May 8, 2026, Kunsthalle Seinäjoki will host a special screening of American visual artist Jessica Segall’s new video work, Second Wave (Don’t Give a Damn). The work will be on view from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Kunsthalle’s screening space Itikka (2nd floor) and will run as a continuous 35-minute loop throughout the day.

Second Wave (Don’t Give a Damn) consists of interviews, music, and video footage shot on 8mm film. The work features women who founded a lesbian commune in the 1970s in the New Mexico desert in the United States. The video work explores community, memories, and alternative ways of living and building relationships.

Queer Guided Tour

Kunsthalle Seinäjoki is hosting Segall’s solo exhibition Oddkin which is ending on the 23rd of May. Oddkin features multi-channel video works and installations. The title of the exhibition, Oddkin, refers to a concept developed by American theorist Donna Haraway. Haraway suggests that care, partnership and survival during the time of environmental crisis do not require blood or family ties. Unlikely alliances that transcend species boundaries can arise unexpectedly and are crucial for our earthly survival. There are still a few weeks left to see this visually striking exhibition, which works are both tactile and affective.

On Friday, May 8, there will also be a guided tour of the Oddkin exhibition at 5 p.m. The tour begins from the Halli exhibition space, and during it, a Kunsthalle’s guide will present the works in the exhibition and the themes behind them, particularly from a queer perspective.

This is a free admission day at the Kunsthalle, so admission to both the video screening and the exhibition is free. The video screening and guided tour are part of the art and culture centre Kalevan Navetta’s Afterwork Art program.

Jessica Segall

Jessica Segall (b.1978 Illinois) has exhibited her work internationally, including in The Fries Museum, The Coreana Museum of Art, The National Museum of Jewish American History and The Queens Museum of Art. Oddkin is Jessica Segall’s first solo exhibition in Finland.

Segall works with a wide range of researchers, activists and non-human actors. Her thinking is guided by an interdisciplinary theory of queer ecology. Queer ecology is a theory and discipline that examines the power structures that both oppress and categorize gender, sex and nature. In her works, Segall performs herself and collaborates with other non-human actors. The visually striking works are both tactile and affective.
