Sigrid Holmwood’s plant dye workshop & artist talk
Kässä workshop, Kalevan Navetta
registration in advance
The charming Vintti exhibition space at the Kunsthalle Seinäjoki presents the exhibition by British-Swedish visual artist Sigrid Holmwood (born 1978) in the upcoming autumn, exhibiting textile art made with plant-based dyeing techniques. The artist got interested in the blue and black colour that are connected with körttiläisyys (a Lutheran revivalist movement in Finland), and which subsequently became the colours symbolising the extreme-right nationalist movements. The Finnish recipe books of the time of the start of the körttiläisyys movement give instructions to make a black dye from logwood (Haematoxylum campechianum) – a ‘blue wood’ that is in fact red coloured, and turns violet with alum, blue with copper, and black with the green crystals of iron sulphate.
The Kunsthalle Seinäjoki and the Seinäjoki Craft Centre of the Taito South Ostrobothnia Association offer an plant dye workshop and artist meeting with Sigrid Holmwood on Friday the 6th from 12 to 4 pm at the art and culture centre Kalevan Navetta. In the workshop, you get to make black colour in different ways and paint on cloth. The workshop is based on techniques that the artist uses in her own work.
The duration of the workshop is 4 hours including a coffee break and an artist meeting, where Sigrid Holmwood tells about her work at the exhibition. The artist speaks English and Swedish. There is a Kunsthalle staff member present to help with the Finnish language if needed.
All materials and equipment needed are provided by the Taito Association! The class fits for experienced participants as well as beginners. Provide yourself with good snacks and spirit of creating! The registration for the class will open at the Taito Association web store closer to the date. Also pricing details will follow.
